Podia Email: A Review and Tutorial for Beginners

Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to test a new email list-building software: Podia Email. Today, I’ll share some of my findings and highlight some of Podia Email’s features so you can decide whether or not this platform is for you.

Podia Email Service Provider

Before I talk about Podia’s email software, I want to introduce you to Podia in general.

Podia is [almost] an all-in-one solution for small online business owners. You can create a website, set up online courses, sell digital downloadables, build a community, and now, with Podia’s built-in email software, you can even build your email list on Podia.

But even if you’re not using Podia for all of your business needs (like me who runs my website and blog on WordPress, for example), you can still use its email software.

What are some Podia Email features?

Podia Email shares similar features with most other email marketing platforms, some of which I’ll highlight below.

Keep in mind that at the end of the day, which email software you choose depends on your personal user experience with a platform’s interface. Podia Email is totally free for up to 100 subscribers, so I recommend you try it out, play around with the forms and newsletter templates, and see how it feels. And of course, also make sure the platform you choose has the features you need to run your business, which varies from one user to another.

And here’s what I love about Podia Email: ALL its features are available not only to paid members but also to free members, as long as they have a Podia account and up to 100 subscribers. Even ConvertKit, which is what I use and love, has only limited features in its free plan. This makes Podia Email a great starting point for new bloggers and business owners on a budget.

These are some of Podia Email’s features:

  • Email designer: Podia makes it easy to send beautiful emails that you can design yourself. You can choose colors, fonts, images, embeds, dividers, and buttons. All emails are also fully responsive.
  • Email templates: Podia Email templates give you a well-crafted starting point that you can use as is or customize to match your brand and style. You can also use previous emails as templates so you don’t have to start from scratch every time.
  • Email forms: Podia Email sign-up forms are automatically linked to your Podia website, products, and email list. You can also embed them to websites outside of Podia. You can also use Podia Email to share lead magnets, create product waitlists, and build full email landing pages.
  • Email analytics: You have all the usual analytics data such as send rate, click rate, bounce rate, unsubscribes, etc. Also, if you have your website on Podia or sell products/courses with Podia, then you can automatically see details like how much money you made from each email.
  • Newsletters: You can send unlimited newsletters to your whole audience or just specific subsets using filters.
  • Automations: You can automate your newsletter welcome emails, product onboarding, and tagging. Send emails to people interested in specific topics/products, and be more efficient and productive with scheduled custom automated emails and campaigns.
  • Tagging and segmentation: If you use Podia for your products, then Podia automatically tracks purchases, sales, memberships, and email activity so you can segment your audience. You can also manually add tags if you want.
  • Free migrations: If you’re using another email provider, Podia will migrate your list for free when you sign up for an annual plan.

On top of the above features, you also get the following in all of its plans, including the free plan:

  • Unlimited email sends
  • Unlimited automated campaigns
  • Email scheduling
  • Unlimited email sign-up forms
  • Unlimited landing pages
  • Customer support

How much does Podia Email cost?

As I mentioned earlier, Podia is free up to 100 email subscribers. If you have more subscribers, then you pay based on your total subscriber number.

For reference, you’ll pay $7 per month for up to 500 subscribers, $13/month for up to 1,500 subscribers, and so on (at the time of writing this).

Please note that Podia Email is an optional add-on for all Podia plans, including its free plan. So, for example, if you’re on Podia’s free plan, and you have less than 100 subscribers, you won’t have to pay anything. But if you exceed 100 subscribers, then you’ll have to pay based on your subscriber number.

If you’re on one of Podia paid plans, then the total cost will be the cost of that plan, and the cost of Podia Email based on total subscribers. So, if you’re on Podia’s “Mover” plan and you have 1,200 subscribers, then you’ll pay “Mover” pricing ($33 per month) + Email pricing ($13 per month for up to 1,500 subscribers). The total will come to $46 per month.

If you have your business website outside of Podia (on WordPress, for example) but want to use Podia for your email marketing, then you can choose Podia’s free plan and pay only for your subscribers.

Pros and Cons of Podia Email

Pros:

  • Podia email has a powerful tracking system that, if you have your website and products on Podia, can be useful to measure sales and conversions.
  • Podia is a pretty intuitive platform. I was able to figure out the Podia Email ecosystem in just about half an hour or so of playing around with the platform.
  • You can use Podia’s site builder to create beautiful landing pages and opt-in forms.
  • Tags allow for powerful segmentation based on subscriber interest, given you’re using Podia’s website and products.
  • I love that all of Podia’s features are available to its free users (up to 100 subscribers; must pay for more.)
  • I also love that all of the newsletter templates are also available to Podia’s free users, and these templates are really easy to customize too, making Podia one of the most beginner-friendly email platforms that I know of despite being so powerful.
  • Podia Email is also one of the more affordable email marketing platforms out there, compared to similar software such as ConvertKit (the one I use), Active Campaign, etc.

Cons:

  • While Podia’s site builder offers beautiful and highly customizable forms and landing pages, their embed forms are minimalistic with no customization options.
  • Embed forms also do not have the option to use different tags for different segmentation.
  • Because of the aforementioned, Podia Email loses some of its most attractive functionalities if not used with Podia’s other features like its sites and products. If you have your website on an external platform (like WordPress, for example), you won’t be able to use pretty forms or segmentations.
Here’s my honest feedback based on the aforementioned pros and cons of Podia Email:

Podia Email is amazing and one of the most powerful email marketing platforms I know only if you use it with the Podia website and/or other features like Podia courses or digital downloadable products.

If, however, you use external platforms for your website and paid offers, then Podia Email can only function as a simple newsletter platform with an email capture tool with the ability to send broadcasts. You will not be able to segment your audience based on their interests if you do not use other Podia tools.

Personally, I love Podia’s online course platform, and I highly recommend it to course builders. If you host your courses on Podia, then the Podia Email addon can help you craft student-specific emails and it’s a lot more powerful (and cheaper too!) than, say, Thinkific’s courses + bulk email plan.

How to Use Podia Email

Of course, the first thing you have to do is create a Podia account. You can start with a free plan, which comes with a free website, one downloadable product, one community, and a bunch of other perks. And of course, you can use their email add-on, which is what Podia Email is.

Once you’ve created a Podia account, here’s how to start using their Email features:

Step 1: Set up your mailing address

It is required by law that you have your mailing address every time you send a newsletter. So, the first thing Podia asks you is to set up your mailing address. To do that, log into your Podia account, and then, from the dashboard, click Email in the navigation and then click either “Broadcasts” or “Campaigns” and they’ll take you to the page where you can set up a mailing address as well as an opt-in text.

Step 2: Get an opt-in form

If you’re like me and do not use Podia to host your website or products, then you do not need to design a form; all you have to do is grab a form embed code and Podia creates it for you automatically, without creating a custom form, which you can then embed on your external website. To do that, go to Email > Broadcast, and then, on the next page, find the three dots toward the top-right side of the page. Click it to open the drowdowns, and choose “Embed email form.” This will give you the embed code that you can copy and paste on your external site.

When you click “Embed email form,” along with the embed code, you will also see the option to tag people who use that specific form to subscribe to your newsletter. You can use this tag to create automations specific to that group of subscribers only, if you choose to do so.

You can also create a landing page on Podia to collect email addresses.

To do that, you have to create a site.

Go to Site > Edit Site.

Then, choose a starting color scheme and choose “Email lander” as your starting template. Click “Continue” to create this page. Once the page is created, you can go ahead and make changes to that page, customize colors, fonts, styles, add texts, and more. When you like what you have, go ahead and publish the page.

Additionally, you can add a tag to this opt-in form. A tag can help you create powerful audience segmentation. I have a video below where I show how to add a tag to a Podia email opt-in form.

Step 3: Create a campaign

Campaigns are automations.

When you set up a campaign, you have the option to send it to a specific group of people based on your tag or other conditions. You can have as many campaigns as you want and have multiple emails per campaign.

For example, you may set up a campaign for all new subscribers; something like a welcome email sequence. And you may have a different campaign for subscribers with a specific tag.

Speaking of tags: you can go to Audience > Tags to see which tags are available to you. From here, you can even create new tags if you want.

To create a campaign, go to Email > Campaign. Then click “New campaign.” The rest is pretty intuitive. I also have a video below where I show you how to create a campaign.

Step 4: Send a newsletter

Sending a newsletter is simple. Just go to Email > Broadcast, then add a new broadcast and follow the prompts.
