I decided to create a brand new Medium account and run it concurrently with my existing and more established Medium account. I would like to explain why.
Leaving aside the fact that I regularly create more work for myself for no good reason only to realize I’ve shot myself in the foot, this decision, I hope, will not only be good for me but for you, my readers, too!
Why I decided to create a new Medium account
Lately, I’ve been getting more and more into writing essays and short stories. And like all 21st-century writers, I want the world to read what I’m writing. The problem, however, is that creative writing is so very different from content! I need a place to practice. In public. So I know what’s working and what’s not working.
And while Medium is a wonderful place where niche doesn’t matter as much, I feel the swing between one end of content writing to the other end of creative writing may be a tad too much, even for Medium.
Like, I’m not just penduluming (no, that’s not an error, I actually typed “penduluming”) between niches; I’m switching genres here!
And that’s why, I felt the need to have two accounts: one for content writing, and the other for creative writing. I’ll continue to use my primary account for creative writing (essays, reported or researched pieces, memoirs, etc.) and will dedicate the new account to content (similar to what I was doing before on Medium—writing about blogging, marketing, online income, etc.)
Do I really need a Medium account for content when I’m already doing it here on The Side Blogger?
Good question.
I do not expect to make a lot of money on Medium. This blog makes me a full-time income already, so why bother creating a new Medium account and spending time there when I know I’ll never make even a fraction of what I make on The Side Blogger with Medium?
Well, that’s where you, my wonderful readers, come into play.
I started this sub-blog on Medium for a reason—to help the interested party jumpstart their Medium journey.
Not everyone wants to create a blogging business in the same way that I’ve done it. I get that. So, to those of you looking to share your ideas and get some reads, and maybe some cash on the side for your time and effort, I want to show you how to do that on Medium.
And to do it properly, I needed to start a brand new Medium account.
How will the new Medium account help you?
I’ve had my primary Medium account since 2017. Even though I was never that invested in writing on Medium seriously until around June of last year, I continued to write there occasionally. That’s not because I was trying to prove anything or make a fortune, but because I truly like Medium as a writing platform for sharing my offshoot ideas and thoughts.
But the truth is that Medium has changed a lot over the years. For example, now, if you want to join the Medium Partner Program (through which writers get paid), you’ll need to have at least 100 followers. This wasn’t the case when I joined the Partner Program. Anyone could just create an account on Medium and get on the Partner Program (as long as their country of residence was supported for payment processing purposes).
When I joined Medium, I wasn’t even trying to increase my following. It happened organically, over time.
But now, if you want to seriously make money on Medium with the Partner Program, you’ll need to be proactive when it comes to building a following. And I cannot truly help you do that until I’ve done it myself. And that’s why, I believe that a new Medium account will be useful. I can do it, and then show you how to do it yourself!
So, essentially, my hope is that you will benefit by observing how I grow a brand new Medium account.
But, will a new Medium account help me?
Umm. I’m not exactly a selfless person. I wish I could honestly say that my only goal here is to help you, but that’s not entirely true.
You see, if I’m successful at growing a new Medium account, I would be able to teach you how to do it, and in exchange you’ll, hopefully, reward me financially 🙂 Maybe I’ll create a course on how to be a superstar on Medium and you’ll buy it. Or maybe you’ll sign up for Medium using my referral link, which will mean a small commission for me 😉
But, even if this experiment fails, I’ll be fine with that. Those of you who’ve been here a while know that I love myself a good experiment, regardless of whether or not it passes or fails. I love a good challenge and the excitement that comes with it. That in itself is a huge payout for me 😀
What’s my plan for the new Medium account?
Some of you may be wondering why I’ve decided to reserve the new account for my business and marketing niche and dedicate the existing account to all things creative.
Well, the reason is simple.
New accounts need traction, and traction comes with quantity. It is easier for me to create a lot of quality content around the business and marketing niche. That’s why I’ve decided that the new account will be for content.
Creative writing, on the other hand, is difficult for me. It takes a lot of time to polish a single piece. I could never pull it off with a new Medium account for my creative writing. At least, not fast enough.
With that in mind, here’s my plan for the new account:
- I’ll try to publish 3-4 pieces per week on the new account.
- I’ll join relevant publications to get more eyeballs on my stories.
- The goal right now is to get 100 followers as fast as possible, without employing cringy methods like follow-for-follow or buying followers, so I can apply for the Partner Program and start making money from my stories.
- Document my growth publicly and periodically so you know exactly how this is going. (Keep an eye out on this space for updates!)
So, what’s the new account?
You can probably find that out with minimal snooping skills, but for the time being (at least until I’ve reached 100 followers) I’ll refrain from linking to the new account. I want the process to be as organic as possible. If I link my new account here and you guys go and follow me, then I’ll simply be leveraging my existing audience to grow to 100 followers.
And that’d be cheating.
So, no linking for the time being 🙂
So yeah, that’s it. A brand new Medium journey starts now!
Wish me luck!
